Hello hello!
During my time in South Africa I have become another one of Virgin Active's minions (an overpaying minion by the way) and I thought that since I spend a fair portion of my time there that it deserved a shoutout on my blog. So here it is...
-The Gym-
A compare & contrast between your typical gym in America & gym in SA
Guys
Ring Ring! Oh sorry, excuse me, it's Billy Ray Cyrus and he wants his hairstyle back.
A mullet, is a mullet, is a mullet. Unless! It's a stullet... a stylish mullet. Puts a new spin on the old school. Every other guy at the gym here has some form of a stullet, and some are just plain old mullets. A fair portion of them are also bleached, even better!
Now that it is 'Movember' most of them actually look like this ^. Mm mm tasty.
Another difference is that in America most guys wear whatever they found on their bedroom floor... ex. a t-shirt, baggy shorts, maybe socks that match... you know... normal guy attire. In South Africa some of the guys look like they laid their outfit out the night before for the gym. Everything matches. Most of it looks ironed (?). Definitely a fashion show.
Girls
The girls at the gym are exactly the same as the ones in America... 3 types
They are exactly the same. It is still a mystery to me how one with long hair can 'work out' without tying it up. Must be some sort of bimbo magic.
The sauna here is the same as well, always full of hotties...
More than anything, people at the gym here can talk. They talk while on the machines, talk while lifting, talk during yoga, talk at the smoothie place, talk whilst naked in the locker room, talk talk talk.
"Hey do you want to go to the gym?" = "Hey do you want to go talk and work out a little?"
When I gym at home I do not talk to anyone. Even if you see someone you know, unless approached or you need to tell them something urgent, you give them a quick wave or a heyyyy and then go about your business. I'm sweaty and gross and hyperventilating on the treadmill, not a great time to chat.
The last difference is actually putting a lock on your locker. At home I don't even own a lock to put on a locker, I just chuck my bag in with keys, phone, etc. etc. and off I go. Here, you have to lock your locker or else you stuff will get jacked yo.
And that my loyal readers is my intelligent interpretation on gymming in SA vs. gymming in America.
Well... I'm off to gym. Ciao
